アメリカの大学って？？ 入学編

第二弾来ました！！
今回はアメリカの大学についてブライアンに語ってもらいました。

今日の課題は「アメリカの大学って入学が簡単で卒業が難しいってホント？？」です。UC Berkelyはアメリカのトップ公立大学でQS世界大学ランキングでは21位、ちなみに東大は25位。

本題に入る前に簡単にアメリカの教育システムについて簡単に説明します。高校は4年制で義務教育。しかも学費は無料。成績がA,B,C,D,Fとありそれぞれにプラスとマイナスがあるその平均値GPA(Grade Point Average)4点満点。

大学に入学する方法は大きく2つあります。

1. 高校から直接出願する
2. 2年制の大学から編入する

※2年制大学はコミュニティー・カレッジと言われ基本的に誰でも入学でき学費が安い。生徒も高校卒後すぐ入学する人や、社会を経験して初めて大学に行く、又わ主婦や移民や定年後に学びに目覚めた人など誰でも通える大学です。

言い換えると入学のチャンスが2回あります。仮に高校時代、勉強に興味がなく不真面目でも2年制大学で良い成績を取り挽回できれば名門校への入学が可能なのです。

そこで本当に入学は簡単なのか？をブライアンに聞いてみました。

ブライアン：2nd time peace peace peace!!

鈴木；今日は、アメリカの大学って実際どうなの？ってところと英語に関しての2つを話したいと思います。であのアメリカの大学に関してなんですけど、日本人はよくアメリカの大学に入学するのは簡単で卒業するのが難しいって話よくするんだけど

ブライアン；Yeah, I get that a lot. a lot a lot a lot.

鈴木；それについて実際どうなのかってことをブライアンに話してもらいたいんだけど、ここにいる白人の人実は早稲田大学に受かっていて早稲田大学とバークレーどっちにすんのってなってバークレーを選んで勉強してるていうちょっと変わった

ブライアン；Yeah, little bit different.

鈴木；んで入学ってまぁーどう違くって難しいのか簡単なのかってどう実際？

ブライアン；Well, the first thing I’d have to say is that in terms of which one is different or which one is difficult and which one is easy, I think it kind of, they both have something easy and both have something hard.

So, the American one we, you have to really have good grades and a nice easy. That can be hard because it’s more stuff to do.But then, the Japanese one is just a test.

So, if you think about it, if you just study for the test, then maybe it’s easy. But at the same time, the test could be kind of hard.So I think both of them can kind of be easy and hard. So I can’t really say which one is easier.

鈴木；じゃーその違い日本の入学制度とアメリカの入学制度の違いってなに？

ブライアン；Yeah, it’s basically, we don’t really have a (entrance) test. We just have grades from the class and then your personal essay.

鈴木；エッセイとグレードどっちが大事なの？

ブライアン；Ummm, there’s kind of a balance actually. So there’s…if you’re good at both of them, so if you have really good grades and you have a really interesting story, that's really great. But some people, like myself, I actually didn’t have really good grades. But I had a really kind of unique interesting story to tell about going to Japan and going to Waseda and those kind of things. So then I was able to write about them. And then that kind of makes you different.

鈴木；じゃーエッセイの方がかなり強くって、

ブライアン；Yeah, my grades weren’t really that great.

鈴木；でもトータルのバランスはよかったんだ

ブライアン；Yeah, exactly. So you just need to strike a balance.

鈴木；じゃー日本は日本で難しいし、アメリカはアメリカで難しいんだ！？

ブライアン； Yeah, pretty much.

鈴木；日本人はちょっと勘違いしてるかもしれません。

ブライアン；Maybe, but yeah…maybe.

鈴木；じゃー次は英語

ブライアン；okay, so when I was talking about school earlier, I said this thing right here. I said, “strike a balance.” It’s an expression we use about balancing stuff. And not really physical stuff, but more kind of abstract stuff.

So, when I was talking about school, or entering stuff, I was talking about striking a balance between having a good essay and having good grades. So basically, I just have to figure out which one am I good at and which one am I not great at, and then just balance them. That way the whole thing is good. And that’s all there is to it.

And also as a student, we also use it a lot for something like balancing social life and studying. So maybe I want to, you know, go hang out with my friends and then maybe I want to study.

鈴木；週末はしょっちゅう飲んでるしね！

ブライアン；Yeah, so I do try to balance.

鈴木；平日すっげー勉強して週末すっげー飲んでるよね。

ブライアン；Yeah, exactly, like that. I just try to strike a really good balance like that.

ブライアン；And then, well yeah, the other thing I think is really good is like pretty relevant to Japanese people is the whole work-life balance thing. I know when I was in Japan, a lot of people talk about work-life balance, so you can just say…

鈴木；日本人バランス悪いからね、働いてばっか、どんだけ働くねんって感じ。

ブライアン；Yeah, that’s what I heard. So basically you could say, “Man, Japanese people need to strike a better balance between working and living.” So kind of the work-life balance.

鈴木；バランスは大事だね！　今回はそんな感じです。ありがとうございました。

あとがき、

このようにアメリカの入学適性は、成績（基礎学力、基礎知識）と行動力（リーダーシップ）の2つの能力が求められます。個人的な活動がイケてないと仮に成績が満点でも入学はできません。行動力は校内の部活や生徒会などで役職を得たり、作家や小さなビジネスで起業している学生なども沢山います。

自分達で行動し世の中を変えていくまた生き残っていく為に勉強するという基本的な考えがあるので、学びを実生活に活用できるようにするために行動力が求められるようです。
